Why Replace Missing Teeth?
At Progressive Oral Surgery & Implantology of Long Island we offer several implant-related restorations for patients who are missing one or more teeth. We cannot stress enough the importance of replacing missing teeth. When you lose a tooth, your remaining teeth will compensate for the open space. If you lose more than one tooth, this problem will only compound.
Without the physical stimulation provided by the root of a tooth, the bone will begin to atrophy. Traditional restorations, like dentures and bridges, do nothing to address this problem. Dental Implants, however, can preserve the bone.
The implant post mimics the natural relationship between tooth root and jawbone, thanks to the process of osseointegration, where the post and bone fuse together. This bond provides the physical stimulation your bone needs to remain healthy and strong, which in turn, gives you a more youthful facial appearance.
Implant Materials• |
Most Implant posts are fabricated using titanium, due to its unique ability to fuse with living bone.

• |
In recent years, implant posts have also been fabricated using a ceramic compound called zirconia. We typically recommend zirconia implant posts if the patient wants the very best in esthetics.
|
• |
Zirconia can be colored to match the shade of your restoration. This means the post will not show through the semi-transparent material.
|
• |
While it is rare, a titanium post can create a grey hue near the bottom of the restoration.
|
• |
We also use zirconia, or porcelain, for the restoration itself. These ceramic materials possess the same light-reflective properties as natural enamel. They can also be shaped and textured to match the appearance of your natural teeth. |
Single Tooth Implant
A single tooth implant generally consists of three parts: the implant post, the abutment, and the restoration. During the procedure, our doctors will surgically embed the implant post deep within the jawbone. For the next several months the implant and your bone will undergo the process of osseointegration. Once osseointegration is complete, we will attach the abutment. The abutment is a support structure that links the implant post to your restoration. A single tooth implant is used to support a single dental crown. As opposed to other alternatives, a single tooth implant will not affect your surrounding teeth. It will be so esthetically-pleasing, comfortable, and durable.
Multiple Tooth Implants
Multiple tooth implant procedure, such as fixed bridges, fixed dentures, and All-on-4 are not too different from their single tooth counterparts. The major difference is the number of implants you receive. Most fixed bridges require an implant for each missing tooth. Implant-retained dentures can require as little two implants. It is important to note that these restorations are only a step above traditional removable dentures. They still need to be removed for cleaning and maintenance.
Permanently fixed restorations, like All-on-4, provide some benefits over other alternatives. As the name suggests, the restoration only requires four implants to support an entire arch of missing teeth. This can save you time and money, as well as reduce your healing period.
