Reasons Why Your Body May Not Accept a Dental Implant

Posted on 11/30/2018 by Rodney Rastegar
Reasons Why Your Body May Not Accept a Dental ImplantDental implants are a great replacement for lost teeth. They don't have to be removed like dentures, making them very easy to take care of.

They're permanent teeth that look like your natural teeth, too, so most people won't even realize you've had implants. While most people are good candidates for implants, there are some reasons why your body might decide to reject the implant.

You're Allergic to Titanium
While few people have a titanium allergy, it is possible to be allergic to the metal. Since most dental implant posts are made from titanium, having an allergy to the metal is an issue. Overall, less than one percent of people have a titanium allergy, so it is very rare. There are other metals we can try if this occurs.

Your Body Dislikes Foreign Objects
While not an allergy exactly, some people's bodies are simply more sensitive to implants and other foreign objects than others. The body may see an implant as a foreign entity that needs to be attacked, leading to a rejection. When this occurs, we may need to consider using a different material or a different implant site.

You Smoke

According to some studies, individuals who smoke are more likely at risk of what's known as late implant rejection. This rejection occurs after the implant area has healed. If you do smoke, you should quit not just to reduce your risk of implant rejection, but also to improve your overall health.

Not Taking Care of Your Implants

Finally, you can also start to reject implants if you don't take care of them. You need to practice good oral hygiene to keep your mouth free of bacteria. Otherwise, the tissue around the implants can become infected. This can later lead to implant failure.
