It is an injury that happens more than many people realize. People fracture their jaw in a variety of ways. A person can get punched in the face and suffer this injury. They could get into a car accident and break their jaw.
They may break their jaw doing something that does not seem dangerous only to find out they have a problem. No matter how a person fractures their jaw, they need to seek treatment.
It is a process that can take 2 months or longer and there are several problems that a person should take note of.
The Treatment for a fractured Jaw
The first issue that people must deal with is how to treat a fractured jaw. IT is not as easy as taking care of a fractured arm or leg. It is difficult to put a cast on the jaw to immobilize it. Despite that, the treatment for a fractured jaw is somewhat similar to other fractures in the body.
Surgery is a possibility to reset the jaw and help repair the fracture. Once that is done, it is important to immobilize the jaw to allow the fracture to heal. That is most often done by wiring the jaw shut. This prevents a person from moving the jaw, but does make it harder to eat and talk.
Other Problems to Face It is very common for a person to suffer both the fracture and a dislocation of the jaw. This means that there are additional steps to take during the treatment. The initial treatment is only the start. Because it takes at least 2 months, if not longer for the fracture to heal, a person has to take steps to make sure they do not cause more damage.
Part of this includes following a soft food diet. This is not easy for everyone to adjust to. When the jaw is wired shut, there are more problems with following a healthy and nutritious diet. This can cause a person to take even longer to heal because their body does not have enough of the vitamins and mineral it needs.
